Summary of “Gardening in the Fall and Beyond”
Presented by Douglas Ravnholdt, October 5, 2018
Written By Kathy DeFore
The Castle Pines Village Garden Club met for their first regular meeting of the season to hear Douglas Ravnholdt’s presentation about gardening in the fall and beyond. Mr. Ravnholdt gave us all a great general overview of gardening tips and shared valuable material in a handout.
Before he spoke, Janice welcomed new members to the club and announced a new member’s gathering would be held on October 15. She also reminded us to buy our Christmas luncheon tickets. The event always closes rapidly as there is a very high demand. It’s a beautiful way to ring in the holidays at the Castle, with good friends, so make your reservations now!
Cheryl Porter introduced Douglas County Master Gardener, Mr. Ravnholdt, and told us that “Doug grows flowers, vegetables, and wine.” We all had a good laugh on that one and Cheryl was reminded that he actually grows “grapes.” Mr. Ravnholdt reviewed some plants that can be successfully cultivated in our area and showed us how to plant root balls. He reminded us not to plant trees too close to our houses and told us about a mulch site in Castle Pines. He also informed us that we can request free site evaluations regarding how to mitigate fire hazards caused by plants on our properties, and he went over frost dates and normal temperatures for various times of the year. He reviewed appropriate planting times, as well.
Mr. Ravnholdt showed pictures of his orchard rack which he uses to store vegetables at 55 degrees in his workshop. He gave us a recipe for deer repellent as well as a list of gardening resources. He asked me to share his email address with everyone in case they had any questions or comments or needed a handout. It is [email protected].
We all had a great time seeing each other once again, and many of us stayed for lunch. We look forward to our next meeting on November 2nd.
