“Making Your Holiday Table Spectacular”
Presented by CPVGC Member Tasha Carrington
Summary by Kathy DeFore Photos by Dianne McOmie
On November 2, 2018, Tasha Carrington, a fellow garden club member and former owner of the popular Castle Pines Village Boutique, “L’Arrangement,” spoke to a full house of 55 members about making your home beautiful for the holidays.
President Janice Wright opened the festivities by introducing new members and guests and showed us an article about the Garden club which was published in “Village Life Magazine.” She discussed the renaming of our town to “The Village at Castle Pines” and the rebranding ideas that were behind the decision to do that. She told us that members would have the opportunity to vote “yea” or “nay” on a proposal to change our club’s name to “The Village at Castle Pines Garden Club.” Decals of two pine branches, for our cars, were made available. Janice also talked about a Gala to be held that night, for the Crisis Center, with fourteen club members pledging to be in attendance. The Task Force’s name has also been changed to “Help and Hope.”
Janice reminded us that there would be a giving tree for the Crisis Center at our upcoming Holiday Brunch. She also talked about the Holiday Sponsorship program and Santa Sharing program. The Holiday Brunch will max out at 80 people and there are only a few seats remaining, so please reserve your spot if you haven’t done so already. A waiting list will be created when the remaining seats are filled. Darcy DeRose and Michele Volkl are in charge. Carol Kingsley passed around the new and very beautiful Garden Club book and will let us know what the final purchase price will be very soon.
Cheryl Porter introduced Tasha Carrington and talked about her floral designs gracing various magazines. She is part of Chapel Designers, a group that specializes in stylish weddings. Tasha showed us how to beautify our Thanksgiving tables with place settings adorned by tiny pumpkins and suggested we write our guests’ names on them with metallic pens. She suggested using various textures and colors of greens in candy dishes, compotes, or soup tureens. Adding apples or pomegranates on wooden skewers gives the arrangements a dash of seasonal color. Foliage with berries, cedar, sage, pine greens, rosemary, and bay leaves were among the greens she suggested.
For Christmas, Tasha recommended a statement piece which she created in an urn with a chicken wire ball coated with plastic in the center or a grid created with floral tape from Michaels. Her design consisted of tall, barren branches, as well as green hydrangeas and red roses. She reminded us that we could open roses by turning the buds upside down and rolling the stems in our hands. Tasha also demonstrated how you could tuck an ornament inside an arrangement to make it more festive.
Tasha used cake pedestals covered with pears as a base for other arrangements. She placed cedar around the edge as well as sage, bay leaves, rosemary that had been dipped in water and sprinkled with sugar, and mercury ornaments. She said that pomegranates also make a lovely base for this kind of arrangement.
Tasha placed pomegranates and greens in soup bowls at each place setting and suggested putting votives “everywhere.” She recommended using duct tape strips to anchor plants over any vessel. She also suggested using a color palette rather than a single shade when creating arrangements. For example, using pinks with reds, would tend to make the red color more pronounced. She recommended not using Oasis which apparently kills plants.
After the presentation, door prizes went to Kathy Fisher, Kim Watson, and Peggy Schultze. We adjourned for lunch and enjoyed visiting with our friends.
